Eliminating CO₂, Energy, and Quality Inefficiencies through Application of AIDownload PDF
Michael F. Peintinger; Falk-Florian Henrich, Otmar Jannasch, Lucas Corts (Smart Steel Technologies)
This paper presents how AI-based software modules implemented across steel mills reduce CO₂ emissions, energy consumption, and quality defects. It covers greenhouse gas emission tracking, temperature guidance from BOF/EAF to continuous casting, reliable defect classification using deep CNN classifiers, and casting optimisation. Results include permanent energy savings of 8K average temperature reduction at the EAF and a 50%+ reduction in sliver defects for automotive exposed grades at ArcelorMittal.

2017

AISTech 2017, Nashville TN
Integrated Quality Control Solutions for Hot Sheet Metal Forming
Michael F. Peintinger, Henry Peters, Sorin Duta, Ryan Kim, Chris Wood (QuinLogic / SMS group)
Hot sheet metal forming has become a state-of-the-art technology for the automotive industry. This paper presents integrated quality control solutions that monitor hot stamping process and part data in real time to assure quality, build process knowledge, and improve production efficiency. Results show that better understanding of quality data correlations and improved process know-how deliver consistent and reproducible product quality, faster product development, and reduced cycle time.

CHS2 2017, Atlanta GA
Integrated Manufacturing Quality Control for Press Hardening Steel
Michael F. Peintinger, Chris Wood (QuinLogic / SMS group)
This paper presents an integrated manufacturing quality control system implemented at Marwood Metal Fabrication in Ontario, Canada, monitoring hot stamping process and part data to assure quality and improve process know-how. The system connects all quality-relevant process and part data, checks production against specifications in real time, and provides live visualization at the press and in the laboratory. Results demonstrate consistent and reproducible product quality, faster product development and certification, and reduced cycle time.
